Slow Cooker Steak: Save Money and Time with this Mouthwatering Recipe

In the ongoing quest to bring you foods that are easy, scrumptious and affordable, here’s our twist on Ropa Vieja, a traditional Cuban dish that combines beef, tomatoes and spices. Just grab a cut of reasonably priced flank steak and throw it into the slow cooker. You’ll seriously be amazed by how much flavor you get out of these ordinary ingredients. De-lish!

Slow Cooker Steak


  • 2 lbs flank steak, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 tsps dried oregano
  • 2 tsps ground cumin
  • 2 tsps kosher salt
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 medium yellow onions, cut into slices
  • 3 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 3 red bell peppers, cut in slices
  • 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • rice or tortillas
  • cilantro (optional)

  • In a large bowl, combine the oregano, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Add the beef pieces and toss and rub into the meat.
  • Place the seasoned meat in the bottom of a slow cooker, and cover with the onions, garlic, and peppers. Pour the crushed tomatoes over, and cook at high for 6-8 hours, until beef is very tender.
  • Remove the pieces of beef, let cool slightly and then shred. Return to the cooking liquid and stir.
  • Serve over rice and tortillas. Serves 4-6.
