The Perfect Summer Cocktail: Tangy & Elegant Frozen Red Wine Sangria

Hosting a backyard bash? I beg you: Don’t pass out from overexertion shaking artisanal cocktails for each of your guests. Instead, mix up my go-to summer party punch: sangria. It’s practically foolproof—get some cheap-ish wine, throw in some fruit, add a little liquor—and it tastes even better if you make it the night before. And here’s a tip: If it’s really hot outside, toss it into a blender with some ice before serving. Think of it as a slushie for grownups. Mmmmmmmm.

RED WINE SANGRIA

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle inexpensive Spanish red wine, such as a tempranillo or rioja
  • 11⁄2 cups brandy
  • 1⁄2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice, oranges reserved
  • 1⁄4 cup fresh lemon juice, lemons reserved
  • 1 cup sugar
  • Rounds of orange, lemon, or lime for garnish
  • Lemon-lime soda (optional)

Directions

1. In a blender, combine the wine, brandy, orange juice, lemon juice, and sugar. Fill the blender with ice and blend on high until combined. Serve in glasses garnished with a slice of orange, lemon, or lime.

2. To make Sangría without ice, mix ingredients in a pitcher and chop the reserved lemons and oranges into small cubes, add to pitcher, and chill. Serve in wineglasses filled with ice.

3. Stretch it a little further for a party by topping each glass with lemon-lime soda.

This photo was taken the day my mom brought me back to the US from Panama, where I was born. She had jet-black hair and a tan, whereas I was basically translucent, with white hair and big blue eyes.
