Tips to Set a Perfect Table, Every Time

Got guests coming over? When it’s too darn hot to even contemplate the microwave, here’s one thing you can do: Set a pretty table and let someone else do the cooking for you. I promise, even pizza delivery can look chic if you serve it up right! There are four basic elements you should always include for a great tablescape:

  • Color. Bring it in with dishware, textiles or a centerpiece. Stick to two tones for a coordinated look or add more for an eclectic appeal.
  • Texture. Crinkly flower petals and nubby textiles look great against smooth, glossy plates. Go for lots of contrast!
  • Pattern. Start with one base color in two or more designs in different different interpretations. Here, we used a kelly green that pops up in the bold runner and napkins, striped glassware and frog accent place.
  • Shine. You should always have something that twinkles or glints. The no-brainer is silverware, but a big tray, a vase or napkin rings are all opportunities for shimmer.
